The right abrasive tool for every step of the process

Thanks to its open, elastic structure, a non-woven abrasive web is capable of applying “soft” sanding, producing surfaces with a low scratch depth that are particularly fine. Fully and evenly interspersed with abrasive grain, a non-woven abrasive web can be used to produce a uniform and reproducible scratch pattern.

Thanks to the great many beneficial properties of the material, the importance of non-woven products in the field of surface finishing is increasing steadily, particularly for the work step of “finishing stainless steel surfaces". What is more, non-woven materials have a particularly long lifetime thanks to the continuous release of new abrasive grain and thanks to the material’s open structure, which keeps it from clogging.

Carrying an extensive variety of products with differences in fibre structure, grain, grit, bonding agent and density, Klingspor offers the right abrasive tool for every processing step - from light deburring and stock removal to cleaning and creating satin finishes to the polishing of surfaces.

The product SMT 850 plus has been specially designed to finish TIG weld seams on stainless steel components. The Combi-Abrasive mop disc is a combination of two tools in one. This is because one side composed of a highly flexible cloth backing coated with aluminium oxide is complemented by a non-woven web, allowing for soft, yet aggressive sanding.

The Klingspor MFW 600 is a high-performance non-woven web wheel that is designed to process steel, stainless steel and NF metal. Combining consistently high performance with maximum safety, the product is used predominantly for weld seam finishing on stainless steel. Intended for use on a fillet weld grinder, the product comes in four different grades of fineness ranging from coarse to very fine.

The choice of the right product hinges on the properties of the non-woven material. Non-woven material is divided into four different categories:

  • Soft non-woven material without fabric lining (clean and finish)
  • Non-woven material with fabric lining (Surface Conditioning Material – SCM)
  • Highly compacted fleece (unitised and convolute)
  • Coarse cleaning fleece (clean and strip)

Non-woven materials are typically used for the following work steps:

  • Light sanding and creating satin finishes

Light stock removal combined with an excellent finish. The right choice: Non-woven tools made of SCM non-woven material with fabric lining (e.g. belts, discs) or combinations with non-woven and coated abrasives (e.g. SMT 850).

  • Finishing and creating matt finishes

Blending scratch patterns, cleaning surfaces and creating a final finish; no stock removal. The right choice: Tools made of soft, flexible non-woven material (e.g. NRO 400).

  • Coarse cleaning

Removal of rust, scale and varnish as well as coatings in general and effortless removal of heat tinting. The right choice: Non-woven tools made of coarse cleaning fleece with an extra open structure, relatively strong non-woven fibres and coarse abrasive grain (e.g. NCD 200).

  • Removal of heat tinting and pre-polishing

Removal of heat tinting and/or creation of surfaces with a low scratch depth that are particularly fine. The right choice: Tools made of highly compacted fleece (e.g. NUD 500). Depending on its density and degree of fineness, the non-woven material may even allow for light stock removal or light deburring.
